Online poker has become so popular in recent years that groups of enthusiasts can be found in virtually every country on earth. The advent of the televised World Poker Series has captured the imagination of ordinary people who prior to its inception would have considered the purchase of a lottery ticket as as major gamble.

It remains to be seen if the October, 2006 legislation in the U.S. to surpress online gambling will dent the ever rising popularity of this game. I suspect that in the short term, this legislationwill have some effect on the popularity of the online versions of this game.

Human beings, by their very nature are ingenious. It will not be long before they find new ways to circumvent the yet to be drafted regulations that are intended to emasculate the cash flow to the online poker rooms. The worst case scenario is that the game will be driven underground and back into the back rooms of yesterdays sleezy gambling dens.

As poker players, all we can do is continue to enjoy our favourite game and wait until the new regulations are released to see just how draconian the they are.

The whole problem could be solved by first world governments accepting that online poker is here to stay and making the decision to license it within their jurisdictions. Since the vocal minority (anti gambling lobby) has the ability to influence the outcome of elections in many states, this is unlikely to happen unless the poker community mobilises in a similar manner.
